Spontaneous or occasional residence in Paraguay is the authorization granted by the National Directorate of Migration to those foreigners who enter the country with the intention of carrying out lawful occasional activities under the conditions established by Law No. 6984/22 and its regulations.

Validity period of the card: up to 90 days, extendable for the same period during the year.

Benefits: authorization to carry out the lawful activity for which such residence has been granted, within the term of granting.

• The following activities are considered as valid legal activities for Spontaneous or Occasional Residence: members of public shows; guests invited by public or private entities due to their art and/or profession; foreigners for internships; professionals, academics, technicians, researchers, scientists, journalists, sportsmen, businessmen, directors, managers and administrative personnel of national or foreign companies transferred from abroad to cover specific positions.

The Temporary Residence in Paraguay is the authorization granted by the National Direction of Migration for a determined period of time to foreigners who enter the country with the intention of settling in order to develop a lawful activity, under the conditions established by Law No. 6984/22 of Migration and its regulations.

Period of validity of the card: up to two years, extendable for the same period. The Temporary Residence will be a prerequisite for the granting of Permanent Residence.

Benefits: 

• Obtaining the status of "Precarious Resident" for the duration of the Temporary Residence procedure before the National Direction of Migration (such status enables the applicant to leave and re-enter the country, study and work for the duration of the Temporary Residence).
• Access to the Paraguayan Identity Card, issued by the Department of Identifications of the National Police, with the same period of validity of your Temporary Residence.

The Permanent Residence for the Change of Category of Temporary Residence established by Law No. 6984/2022 of Migration is the authorization granted by the National Direction of Migration to reside indefinitely in the national territory, to the foreigner who expresses his intention or intention to settle permanently in the country, meeting the legal conditions for admission by the DNM in such capacity and after having completed the term of Temporary Residence.

Period of validity of the license: definitive, and the license must be renewed every ten years.

Benefit: access to the Paraguayan Identity Card, issued by the Department of Identifications of the National Police, with a validity period of 10 years.

The Permanent Residence for Foreign Children, Spouses and/or Grandchildren of Nationals (the latter up to the age of 18) is the authorization granted by the National Direction of Migration to reside indefinitely in the national territory to the foreign family member of a national who is included in Article 48 of Law No. 6984/22 of Migration and who expresses his/her intention or intention to settle permanently in the country, meeting the legal conditions for his/her admission by the DNM in such capacity. 

Period of validity of the license: definitive, and the license must be renewed every 10 years.

Beneficiaries: through the repatriated national, the following will have direct access to Permanent Residence: his/her spouse, children and foreign grandchildren, the latter up to the age of eighteen. Likewise, the spouse of the child of the national may do so.

Benefits: 

• Access to Permanent Residence without the need to have a previous Temporary Residence.
• Exemption from payment of the fee for Permanent Residence by presenting the Repatriation Certificate.
